Thundamentals On The Prowl

Personally, when I think of dope live acts in the Australian scene, Thundamentals are definitely up the top of the list.  Which is why it gives me all sorts of uncontrollable spasms to report that tomorrow night they kick off a short but sweet little tour to support their newest single My Lady, the latest showpiece from last year’s debut album Sleeping On Your Style.

I’m not the only one who thinks so – I have never heard anything but positive feedback about the Thunda’s live show.  Co-frontman Tuka is familiar with the assessment so it’s no surprise the response he gave me when I asked about the lead-up to Friday night’s performance.

“I’m a bit nervous, hopefully numbers come out, I’ve got a pretty good feeling though…” he tells me, “It’s been difficult to prepare for this one a bit more because the DJs are up in the mountains, and the MCs are down in Sydney so at the moment it just takes a bit of back-and-forth.  We’ve been trying to sort out a couple of new tracks we’re performing off the record which we haven’t done yet, like Favourite Things and Broke Pocket Philosophy with Dialectrix, because our first two shows are with Dialectrix in support…”

Even though the group (featuring Tuka and Jeswon on the mics, with DJ Morgs and Tommy Fiasko providing beats), are far from unfamiliar with the Annandale Hotel setting, they’ll get an opportunity to take the party home to Katoomba on Saturday.  “We’ve got a pretty solid following up there now,  because we kinds grew up there as well I spose and they’re proud of their local hip hop crew,” says Tuka, “but yeah we do get pretty solid numbers, they’re probably just as good as Sydney – which you wouldn’t think but yeah the kids come out, check it out, it’s great.”

After the two NSW shows,  next weekend Thundamentals will be heading down to Melbourne where Seth Sentry will be in support, quickly getting up to Brisbane the night after (probably via teleportation) to do a show with Rainman and Kryptamystik.  But some time in the near future we can expect a film clip to go with the “My Lady” single.  Filmed on Australia Day, the intention was to make everything go backwards a la The Pharcyde’s Drop.  Tuka brings the inside word: “We got the first cuts back!  And they looked really funny, it was really cool… we couldn’t actually get our lyrics in-sync because it was meant to be in reverse… but we’re kinda sorting something else out at the moment, like a plan B, so it’s going to look a tad strange, but it’s on purpose and hopefully our lips will be in sync with the actual song.”

If it’s on par with this previous effort…

… then there’s a very high chance that the clip will be high quality.  Even if it does feature footage of me spilling my beer (in reverse!).

Don’t sleep!  Thundamentals put on a sick live show and this is where you can catch them:
